Exceed and VNC are a different pair of shoes. VNC is a remote display system. Exceed is a X server. If the original poster runs X on his server, he doesn't need Exceed and can work on a remote machine the same way as he would do on the server itself by using VNC. Of course there are some performance drawbacks, but I think the problem is something different.

Mikko, what is the value of the DISPLAY variable? Did you check, if a window opens on another display at the server? Can you try to trace the eventually hanging process to see what it's waiting for?
