HELP! Newbie - Oracle8i and Linux SuSe, ORACLE not available

I have installed Oracle8i on Linux SuSe 7.2. I can not "start" oracle.
I can start sqlplus and svrmgrl. But once I have started sqplus and enter any command the system responds with "ORACLE not available". Has anyone seen this before? Anyone know how to fix it? I have spent 4 days on this, yes, I have checked everything imaginable. I would list everything I've tried here expect the message would be enormous.

Thanks
