That isn't true. The 'old' syntax still works, provided you did set up your sid_list correctly in listener.ora. As that is at the server side, I'm not sure whether your concern is justified. As long as you use the sid= syntax you should be ok. Not including domain names has been more or less a sign of lazyness always, so if your 7.3 or 8.0 tnsnames.ora is OK, you probably shouldn't use the service_name mechanism introduced in 8i.
