syncing RMAN catalog with Legato Networker - how?

scenario is:

using Legato Networker 6.1 with Networker Module for Oracle 3.5 (previously BusinessSuite Module and EMU before that) with Oracle 8.1.7 RMAN repository. Have over 100 databases to provide a backup service for.

challenge:

Oracle Enterprise Manager 2.2 with DBA Studio has backup/recovery functionality. However, it does not allow the user to implement any kind of retention policy and left alone it will simply allow the RMAN catalog to grow without bounds.

Legato NMO provides the media management layer between Oracle and Networker. From Networker Administrator it allows the user to schedule RMAN backups/recoveries and provides a single point of control for the scheduling. It provides browse and retention policies for the Networker database and ATL attached to the backup server. The key problem is that Legato NMO doesn't appear to synchronise with the RMAN catalog. So although the tapes may be on a 2 week retention cycle for example, the RMAN catalog entries will be stacking up unmanaged.

Can anyone confirm

  1. if this analysis is correct, otherwise put me right
  2. if correct then operationally, whats the best way to get around this?
