I have installed 9i client on Mandrake 8.1 (didn't need the full blown database) and yes, it is a nightmare.
A couple of suggestions I have collect from a number of places: 1) after starting the install and it dies, go to /tmp and and oracle subdirectory and install the blackdown jdk there, (remove the one that oracle installer put there and rename the blackdown directory). 2) under mandrake to get the 'next' button to work make sure you NUM LOCK off (yea, that stupid but I found that answer at metalink. 3) you don't need to reinstall an older binutils, after you get about 64% percent thru you get a message about ins_plsql.mk, anyway it has to do with you having too new of binutils, drop into a shell and modify genclntsh file, it in $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh and near the bottom remove the '-z defs' and then rerun that script, it may take a while, after it's done then click 'retry' on the install screen.
4) another message pointed you to
http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.html and does a decent job explaining to install. Another decent guide (for Oracle 8 but still a decent guide) is at http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/817.html

I hope this helps, Good Luck.
