problem with cursor oracle 7.3.4

Oracle 7.3.4

i need to make operations with the data of records from a table. I open a cursor on the table, but i have to mark every record that has been processed. The problems is when i update a record that is implicated in a cursor that is opened. Process became very slow, because of the updates. what can i do ?
