As for questions 2 and 3. Some observations:
- No, not everybody passes certification.
- The act of attempting certification indicates a confidence in one's own
abilities. Why bother if you think you are not going to pass? My point being
that bad to mediocre DBAs won't attempt certification. In my experience the
BEST DBAs don't bother because they have reputation to sell them (meaning they
could easily pass the certification but have no need for it), the
better-than-mediocre DBAs go for certification, sometimes requiring several
attempts. The really good DBAs, without a reputation, will go for cerfication
(and pass first attempt) as validation of their skills.
- Certification is more than training. Sometimes it doesn't involve training at
all. Think of it more like the SATs in high school.
