Hello Jérome,
maybe a silly question, but why do you want (must?) use Oracle 8.1.7 on
RH 5.2?
As far as I know, RH 5.2 uses Kernel 2.0.x. On the other hand, Oracle
Installation Guide for 8.1.7
(is included in your downloaded stuff from OTN, take a look at OS
requirements) requires Kernel version 2.2 or higher.
Simply spoken, OS (Kernel) and libs are far to "old" for Oracle 8.1.7.
My personal experience with Oracle requirements is that you should take
them as a serious advice. Made my own experiences sometimes on the hard
way in taken them too lightly, using Oracle on Linux now extensively for
18 months (RH 6.1, 6.2, 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 with client and server
installations).
My advice for your situation: install at least RH 6.2, runs fine with
Oracle 8.1.7. With Kernel 2.2 you are free to concentrate on the Oracle
stuff.
Just my 2 (european) cents..., others may have different opinions.
Have a nice day
