I guess from the information you provided you are using Unix as your database server. please answer the following questions to help me to resolve your problem.

  1. Version of Oracle (with 9i connect internal is desupported)
  2. if you are not using 9i, do you have more than one oracle version on this server.if so did you try using oraenv to set your environmnet or did you try setting up the environment in the shell level.
  3. check your .profile file if your default shell is korn or check .cshrc file if your default shell is c shell. it will make a difference if you don't use oraenv to point to proper database & version.
