Bringing Copy of Live DB to a Dev Box - Steps ?

I am about to bring over a b/u copy of my live DB to a dev box that
already has a play DB installed (play DB created when I installed
Oracle). I know how to bring up the new DB with "STARTUP pfile=" - but
my question is - what steps do I need to take before I load the copy
of the live DB over.
