isolation level being set millions of times

while testing recently, we encountered the following statement:

alter session set isolation-level = read committed

this statement was executed millions of time during the test. there is no code in our application that issues this statement. can someone tell me where this comes from? one suggestion so far has been jdbc, but i find no confirmation from searching the web, including otn.
