Getting a mental handle of forms concepts

I am currently learning Report Designer 2.4 (circa 1994)
 I know that Oracle reports are based around SQL queries



I wonder if forms are likewise  .. .



I am still coming to terms with the idea of windows canvases etc,  and how
the fields in blocks get populated.



Can someone point to a web based explanation of the key concepts.
