I can help you as I had the same experience of installing oracle8i(817) in a P4 machine. The problem is the JVM of oracle817 may not support P4.
Salution: (1) Download jdk1.1.8 from java.sun.com and install it on your machine.
(2) Copy oracle817 Disc into your harddisk such as e:\oracle817. (3) Copy the whole directory of JVM of just installation into e:\oracle817\stage\Components\oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30\1\DataFiles\Expanded\j re\win32, that is using sun JVM overwriting this JVM.
