Check your tnsnames.ora file..does it specify the host by its dns name or in dot notation? If your thin driver is faster it may be because you use the actual ip address, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and not myserver.my.domain.name
so no 'trips to the nameserver for decoding and routing' are needed..
