date case sensitive?

If I do a where clause on a search, and compare a date in a database to say 23-MAR-01, or 23-mar-01, or 23-Mar-01, will they return different results depending on case? Trying to figure out if it's necessary to add in there a UPPER function since the date is user inserted. Thanks.
