Finding Oracle_Home programatically(sp?)

In the NT world, is there a way to determine the Oracle_home for an Oracle server? I know we could set an environment variable, but is there another way ( like somehow reading the registry key that contains it) ? Is there an oracle view that maybe has this? ( various versions 8.0.5 thru 8.1.7 )

Thanks for any ideas...
