Re: Clarification of backup procedures?

Hi,

if you are backing up your oracle files, while the database is open, and the tablespaces are not in backup-mode, then you can throw away your nightly backups, they will be quite useless for you.

For backup-questions, you should really read the documentation, it's such a important issue !

For very short:

• Offline Backup: If you can afford to shutdown your database every evening before your system backup starts, this is quite uncomplicated. Shutdown the database, backup all the files, restart the database Advantage: easy Disadvantage: database has to be down, can you afford this ? If database isn't running in archivelog-mode, you can only recoover to your latest (complete) nightly backup (what happens, when database crashes at 5pm, lost all your daily work ...)
• Online backup: your database must be in archivelog-mode for this. You don't have to shutdown the database for this. You have to alter your tablespaces in an special backup-mode, then back them up.
• Exports: you can export your database to flat file, full, or user or table related.
