Both Oracle advices are correct and not contradictory.

IE: you should use an shutdown abort *ONLY* when your shutdown immediate fails, as shutdown abort crashes the database. So the second advice is also correct:
You should not trust in a backup after a shutdown abort.

However your solution 1) actually recovers the database before going down. So if you can't do it properly (shutdown immediate only) you should probably use the first solution.
