While Perl, Python, etc. are good database scripting languages, I think you are most likely to encounter Bourne and Korn. Books, magazines, legacy scripts etc. for database maintenance most often appear in one of those. I've found I have to know a little of both in order to maintain and modify existing scripts (life with VMS DCL sure was simpler!)

Books like "Unix Shell Programming" - Arthur and Burns - attempt to cover them all, which is helpful if you're in a mixed environment.
