pro*c compile question

hi,
i'm ready to start my first pro*c application. how do i compile it? it says to use a makefile in the documentation, but we don't have the demo files installed, so i don't have the makefile and i have *no clue* how to make one. can't i just use the cc command? is there a debug option for this like there is for informix's esql so that i can pull the output up in the debugger?
(running pro*c on sun solaris with oracle 7x)
