I would stay away from any Oracle, SQLServer, Informix, ... books right now. Maybe you can find a SQL or maybe Databases for dummies. It seems like you first need to understand what a database is and what it is used for. Most of the vendor books assume you know why you picked up the book. Look for something like SQL for dummies.
