netasst not working

Hi All,

I have installed oracle8.1.6 on my redhat linux laptop. I am teaching myself oracle for linux. I am trying to get net 8 assisstant started. When I type "netasst &", I get a process number but no net 8,

[1] 1234  

I don't even get an error message.
Anyone know why this is happening?
I am using redhat 7.1
