I think I found part of the problem. When the root.sh script is executed it creates a clean oratab file. The problem is that the file has group ownership 'root'. When I changed the group to 'oinstall' the installation didn't succeed but the script did run. Now onto the next problem... why didn't the script succeed. I'll make a post if I learn anything...
