Actually:
Oracle8i, Oracle9i and Oracle11i are 'brand names' - an indication that Marketing is hard at work.
Oracle8i commonly refers to database version 8.1.x
Oracle9i is the 'next gen core technology' as a complete 'technology suite'
Oracle11i is the 'applications suite'
- basically enytime you thing of SAP, PeopleSoft, JDEdwards, Siebel, Clarify,
CommerceOne, etc, etc you find equivalent functionality (no flames please) in
Oracle11i E-Business Suite.
The nice thing about these suites is that they (theoretically) interoperate - you can install any of the Oracle9i products to interwork with any of the Oracle9i products - eg: 9i DS tools will create programs, etc. for 9i DB and 9i AS. Similarily, no additional interconnect to have 11i financials working with 11i call center, etc.
