Unfortunately the book is right - shutting down 'immediately', namely using SHUTDOWN ABORT, will likely require an instance recovery. Shutting down gracefully but quickly, using SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE will not, as it ensures the shutdown is clean.

But I do agree with your sentiment.
