What you said is only one case for the "UNDEFINED" type on some "old" versions.

On Oracle 8i release 8.1.6:
Snapshot/Materialized views are displayed as TABLE in OBJECT_TYPE column of DBA_OBJECTS view.

The objects you saw are probably LOB segments, you can check thir type#. Type#21 are LOB segments associated with BLOB/CLOB columns.
