I haven't experienced this problem myself, but...

Have a look at $ORACLE_HOME/install/crdb1.log (or similar) - it's the log generated by the database assistant process and may have some useful information.

I'm surprised that Net8 assistant is not popping up a screen asking you for new database details - do you have any other tnsnames.ora files that it may be picking up by mistake?
