Oracle 8.1.7 Installation Woes

I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 Enterprise Edition on my Ultra5 running
Solaris 8 01/01.  I receive an error during the database creation process,
specifically when Oracle Database Configuration Assistant creates an initial
database.   The error message that I receive is ORA-01034:  ORACLE not
available.  Any insight about this problem?
