 Phil,

"Bus error" is generically related to some issue with the bus. (I know what you're thinking but let me continue..) Usually it may be termination, (or lack of it), a bad device or cable generating noise on the bus . Since you are doing specific commands when the error occurs, it most likely is the access to the disk with the filesystem housing Oracle executables. I would check the /var/adm/messages file, (which is dated and timestamped) and could likely indicate other problems. I would check connections and functioning of the Ultra as well as the terminations of all attached devices. When the connections are verified, reboot and watch that the startup messages are without error. Verify OBP, firmware and patchlevels are current.
