Global Database Name, Database Name, and SID

It seems that for the most part, the Oracle Global Database Name, Database Name, and SID should follow the same naming convention.

Example:
Global Database Name = foo.bar.com
Database Name = foo
SID = foo

However, there isn't anything to stop someone from naming these things differently. It seems that Oracle provides the granularity to do so.

Example:
Global Database Name = pollywog.pond.com Database Name = frog
SID = toad

My question is:
Why would someone want to name each of these differently? What's the benefit? What's a good, "real-world" example.
