Hi...

i had this problem once setting up designing an interface between a legacy system (As400) and an OLTP database (Oracle 7.3).
We decided (toghether with the customer) to use a small batch job to exchange data back and forth the two systems. The other solution was a Gateway.
Pros and cons...
our solution: quite fast and reliable (the env is a bank and they approved it)... but informations are updated based on the job schedule... and it's not a distributed env (As400 data are read only)... overall pro _very_ cheap.
gateway: very fast... transactions are allowed even on the legacy system... reliable (?) i have no clue... i fought one month to have a stable gateway configured for a DB2 database on an IBM machine.. and _very_ expensive.

I don't know whether the technology has improved in the meanwhile.
