hi all, I have two database (8.1.5) on two different box but have same instance name. Since I am kind of new to oracle, I am only comfortable only with one database, one instance per machine and I can do point in time recovery in this situation. But I want to test point in time recovery of one database(soon going to be production) in another machine(which has devlopment database with same instance name, but memory, mountpoints and directories structure are different). So I have follwoing questions(please bear with me):
a. Do I need to create another instance and/or database in devlopment machine since I already have same instance name running in dev. machine ? If so how do I tell oracle to resuse the current control file and datafiles(and its contents) which are from production database, when creating new database?
b. Can one machine have more than one instance and databases? What effect will it make on my development database when I try to restore production database?
c. I know answer to above questions may be lenthy, so just the steps in correct order(starting with init file till database creation) would be enough .
I have 8.1.5 standard edition.
Thanks in advance Received on Fri Feb 16 2001 - 13:27:07 CST
