ORACLE connection problem

We have several client PCs with Developer 6i tools installed. Some are able to
connect to the database on a unix server by entering user, password and sid. Others need the sid with the ".world" suffix.

What causes some to need .world and some not? Each client uses a copy of the same tnsnames.ora file.
