I don't have any experience with Oracle 8i lite, but I've used Personal Oracle 8, Oracle 7.1, 7.3 and 8.057. I think my explanations should work. First off, you didn't mention in what capacity you were trying to use the login name scott/tiger. In most cases the instance should be specified also. For example, if I just installed a brand new version of Oracle 8 with the starter database, the login would be scott/tiger_at_ora. Also, don't forget, when setting up a database for the first time, the dns (data name source) must be specified. Use your easy config to set this up. A rule of thumb is to name your database and your sid the same. In the example above, I would name my sid ORA and my database ORA also. At the end of the configuration is an opportunity to test your connection. If you are still unable to make a connection, you've made a mistake along the way. Once the dns has been established on the server, the same thing has to be done on each client, using the same tool. If you're smart, you'll simply copy the tnsnames.ora from the server to the client. It's the same information anyway. The error you're getting tells me you either haven't established your dns yet, or you made a mistake when setting it up, or you forgot to set it up on the client.

Give me a buzz if you have any questions.
