Connecting to Oracle 8i instance with Java

I have an Oracle instance running and can connect to it through SQL *Plus.
I need to be able to connect to it with Java running in either an app or
applet.  Does anyone know where a (hopefully) short code snippet is to
simply allow connection to the database?
