A way to defeat Microsoft

A way to defeat Microsoft

As history has shown us, when an entity gets too big, it tries everything it can to keep or preserve its dominance over people/companies. With deep pockets it tries to take over or buy anything that threatens it.

Here is an idea that may topple this bloated organization that tries to and succeeds to sell the public sub-standard software and keeps the public and companies on a perpetual up-grade cycle.

This strategy was actually developed by Microsoft! Yes, believe it, we will use Microsoft’s own strategy against itself.

What was Microsoft’s strategy?

When Microsoft realized that it was late in the Internet Browser boom, it tried to brute force its way in by trying to take over Netscape, but when that failed, this is what they did:

  1. They regrouped and developed a far superior browser called 'Internet Explorer'.
  2. Microsoft then GAVE THIS SUPERIOR PRODUCT AWAY FOR FREE.

That's it! It is simple, efficient and brilliant ==== AND ====> with all the gain for Microsoft, even though it was giving a superior product away for free.

This move killed Netscape, because why would anyone buy a product if it was free somewhere else? Would you, the reader of this post, buy a Mercedes, when you could get a BMW for free?

Netscape realized what Microsoft was doing and was FORCED to give its browser away ===> free of charge.

'Netscape Navigator' was the lifeblood of Netscape at that time.
Netscape has since regrouped, but has never been the same since.

Proposal

Here is my proposal for the 'heavy weights' that know Microsoft products are sub-standard and also know that Microsoft has to be defeated to restore individual creativity in the computer industry.

1.

Big companies like IBM, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, SUN, Novell etc. [and other heavy weights in the computer industry] will have to put aside their differences and form a joint-venture operation.

The reason for the 'joint venture' is to spread the cost, since each company will put in the same amount of time and creative thought into this project; they would have to reach an agreement on what each company will have to do.

2.

They bend down and create an operating system far superior that windows. Even OS/2 warp was better that windows, but it never caught on.

3.

After development and testing of this new, far superior operating system, register it under Public Domain, give the source code to developers to develop their programs for this new operating system.

THEN GIVE IT AWAY FREE. It may also be a good idea, at first, to make the operating system
'co-exist' with windows, that is at boot time, the individual will
choose what operating system to boot. (Just like the choice an individual is given when a computer has both Windows95 and Windows NT on the same system).

This will help the public get use to the new operating system, but still feel 'safe' that their old operating system and files are still there. Once the public is familiar with this new operating system and realizes that it blows windows out of the water, they will switch, they will switch FAST.

Develop compatible programs at the launch of the new operating system, like word processing programs, Internet browsers, make this new operating system compatible with most hardware and also have it recognize JAVA. [I.e.: Do not launch the operating system 'cold']. It must have some 'killer applications' at launch time.

MOVE # 3 WILL KILL MICROSOFT, because Microsoft will be forced to either improve their operating system, or give it away for free, they may do the former, but the will never do the latter, which is the goal of this strategy.

ANALYSIS So the companies who invest their creative thought into this project may ask, 'what's in it for me? '

THINK ABOUT IT: If to get Microsoft out of the way is not motivation enough, I'll outline some more:

  1. Every Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) knows that you cannot buy 1 piece of windows98 by itself. No, you have to buy a 'distribution pack' of 5 pieces of Windows 98 or 3 pieces of Windows NT.

Which boil down to about $90.oo for each operating system per computer. NOW, if the new operating system is FREE and you SAVE $90.oo per new computer - you do the math.

2. So what is in it for software companies? Well, no more licensing fees that tend to choke just about everyone. You have the SOURCE CODE to tweak your software perfectly. You create more robust software that you know you have developed for the profit of your company. With no
'800 Pound gorilla' hovering nearby.

Please do not confuse LINUX with this strategy.

Although linux is a good operating system and Xwindows is a lot like windows, unfortunately, it is not easy to install and is not compatible with any windows based programs.

People will have to reformat, repartition their hard drives to install linux. This is a big NO, NO if you want this strategy to work. The operating system has to be as easy to install as AOL is. And the software has to get into the hands of individuals as AOL CDs are.

CONCLUSION I am just an observer and this post are my thoughts, everyone is being choked BY ONE COMPANY. Big companies being choked have the resources but do not seem to be doing anything.

You big companies have a choice, remain as you are and remain slaves to Microsoft or put individual profit making aside, consider this a long term investment (may even be a tax write off - consult your accountants on this one). And crush one of the most obnoxious companies on this planet.
