Hi Kevin
When I studied for the DBA track I used the Couchman book as my main
resource backed up with the Exam Cram books in the week prior to the exams.
I found both useful particularly the Exam Cram books (there were 2 books for
7.3 certification, these have been expanded into one book for each exam for
Oracle8 certification).
I have to say that I came at this with considerable on-the-job Oracle
experience as both a developer and latterly a DBA, and I'm not sure that
these books would be enough for somebody fresh to Oracle. I have used some
of the Oracle CBT material and although I have found them useful I was bored
to tears with the content and had to switch off the soundtrack to avoid the
nauseous feeling it was eliciting (apologies to our US west coast viewers).
It's now possible to register free for some trial lessons via the web from
Oracle although you'll need a fast link and even then you will have to
connect at a quiet time. I've had a look at a couple of these that Couchman
himself presents and they are surprisingly amateur, he seems to be making
the content up as he goes along and I certainly wouldn't be prepared to part
with my hard-earned cash for this stuff.
Good luck with your OCP endeavours. I'm now finding that clients here in the
UK are starting to be impressed with Oracle certification and it's probably
only a matter of time before it becomes a prerequisite just to get an
interview.
Regards
NickB
