First of all, I'd get the client to upgrade to Oracle 8.1.6. It's an easy upgrade and 8.1.5 has lost support from Oracle. Second, I'd get the client to upgrade to SP6(A). If memory serves me well, they need this upgrade for Y2K issues.
These two upgrades will eliminate many of your questions and get you both on the same platform.
