Scott, this comment (and the others below) is/are total gibberish. There are perfectly good reasons to be taking archives (ie, the ability to guarantee recovery to the time of failure), totally independent of the manner in which you choose to take backups. All taking archives means is that you have the *choice* of doing hot or cold backups. Without archives, you have no choice -you *must* do cold backups. With archives, it's entirely up to you what you do (and cold backups have the distinct advantage of being a total doddle to perform).
