Accessing SQL Feedback information

Is there a way to query for the number of rows deleted after a DELETE statement in SQL? I know how to access this in PL/SQL but I don't know about SQL. This would be the info that is displayed in SQL*Plus feedback. Where is SQL*Plus getting it?

Thanks for your time,
Dianna
