Nothing turns me off quicker than when a person has Oracle, Sybase, or MS SQL Server in big letters all over their resume and claims to be a database expert, but then can't answer simple questions about table design or write a query that is any more complex than SELECT * FROM SOMETABLE.

Typically, I'll ask them some questions, they'll dance around them the best they can, and then the confession comes out that they "took a class" or "read a book" and never really worked with it in real life. At this point, the doubt has been planted in my mind and I start to wonder what else on the resume has been stretched or made up. The interview usually goes downhill from there.

I'll have a lot more respect someone who is honest about their level of experience and isn't demanding a ton of money for experience they don't have.    Received on Mon Aug 28 2000 - 17:03:13 CDT
