There is not. This restriction has always existed and Oracle specifically designed clob, blob and bfile to lift that restriction. I'm not too sure about you statement 'a long is much easier to operate on'. Why would Oracle then have replaced the long by new datatypes? Numerous limitations with respect to longs exist.
