field in data file exceeds max length in SQLLOADER

Does anyone know why I'm getting this error message 'Field in data file exceeds maximum length' my field is a varchar2(4000), and I get this error when I truncate that field down to 300. If I truncate it down to 30 (in my data) it works fine
