Newbie Question

I am a NEWBIE to Oracle, and am having problems. I have a NetWare 5 server and have the 5 user Oracle8 product installed. I am trying to use Kemma Software's BridgeTrak help desk software with Oracle and it has not been fun. My problem right now is this error message:

ORA-12505: TNS:listener could not resolve SID given in connect descriptor.

I have run lsnctl80 and verified started status with DBSNMP_STATUS. Can anyone help??? I am also wondering where I can get some good documentation on error codes like this. All suggestions are welcome, and I greatly appreciate your help.
