If you are already doing hot backups from scripts you don't have to use RMAN. RMAN really just helps keep track of everything and that can be a lot if you're doing hot backups. By knowing where everything is RMAN can make recovery easier. And RMAN interfaces with third party backup solutions such as Veritas.
