I can only help with the shutdown question. Are you doing a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE or just a SHUTDOWN? My instructors for Oracle advised that if I did a plain SHUTDOWN, it may never complete, that it is better to do a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE. I hope this helps.
