eof in communication channel

Hi,



I'm trying to connect to my oracle db (8.1.6) Linux,
using both svrmgrl and sqlplus, but am getting an
eof in comm. channel error upon a connect 
user/password_at_connect_string.  Only connect internal
seems to work, but system and other user accounts
don't.  Where is the eof stemming from?  Thanks.
