We are using a point to represent each cell. The bottlenecks would come from your table design (we use certain attributes to get to sections of the data) and the number of points you have. It all comes down to some Oracle tuning and some good db design.

If you find anything that may be of use in Spatial please post it. Info is hard to come by.
