newbie: install + configure pO8i

I have downloaded and installed Personal Oracle 8i (8.1.5) on win98se. I had hoped to be able to use it for development purposes at home so that I could avoid commuting to HQ where an Oracle enterprise is installed. What I need to do is to set up an ODBC DSN and/or OLE DB connections. The installation is working to some extent - I can log on using SQL Plus - actually I can't really log on - if I OK out of the log on without entering anything and then provide a UID and PWD (scott/tiger) when prompted I can work with the sample database. But no host strings I've tried work - "TNS: could not resolve server name". My problems arise from my complete lack of understanding of Oracle's terms for various flavors of a name. What is a Host, a Server, a Service, a Database, a Domain, a Profile, a Key, a SID, etc?

What I'd like to do is simply fill in the appropriate box for either the MS ODBC for Oracle or Oracle ODBC driver. MS asks for a "server" while Oracle asks for a "service name". How do I go about setting up a valid one of either (or are they the same thing?).
Here's what was set-up by the installation as told by Net8 Assistant:

Profile:
Default Domain: [blank]
Selected Methods:TNSNAMES,ONAMES,HOSTNAMES Net Service Name:
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA

Key Name:EXTPROC0
Protocol:IPC
Listener:

LISTENER
Oracle Names Servers:
None found

I tried adding a Net Service Name with IPC and TCP/IP protocols but none works - when tested I get "TNS:protocol adapter error" and "TNS:No listener" errors respectively.

I'm stuck. Even a URL for some definitions would be an enormous help: give a starving man a fishing pole and he can feed himself - give an Oracle neophyte a glossary and he can provide his own technical support.

Thanks,
VP
