DBLinks to Non-Oracle databases

The Oracle documentation I have states that you can create database links to non-Oracle databases. That's about the extent of the discussion. My questions are:

1. Which non-Oracle databases can be used?
2. What modifications do I need to make to the tnsnames.ora file to support this.
3. Examples???
